As a lecturer at the Politecnico di Milano in the 1980s, Achille Castiglioni would implore his students to “Start from scratch. Stick to common sense. Know your goals and means.” He clearly took his own advice when he, with his elder brother Pier Giacomo, designed the dramatic Arco Floor Lamp . Inspired by a streetlight, the Arco cleverly provides overhead lighting without requiring ceiling suspension, its polished shade extending nearly seven feet to accommodate a dining table or sofa beneath the light source. Aware that the 78-pound lamp would be difficult to move, the designers smartly placed a hole in the base to accommodate a broom handle. They also gave the Arco an adjustable arc and swiveling shade for precise lighting control. As groovy as it is elegant, the lamp achieved icon status when it appeared on screen alongside Sean Connery in Diamonds Are Forever and in The Italian Job (apropos). The Arco is included in the permanent collection at MoMA. This is the authentic Arco Lamp produced by Flos. Bulb (included): incandescent 100W/120V/A21SB. The Arco Floor Lamp must ship with our White Glove delivery service. Made in Italy.

5 Awesome Features of the Arco Floor Lamp The statuesque Arco lamp replica is a reproduction of the Casiglioni Arco lamp, the most prestigious arch floor lamp in its class. Its unusual shape was modeled after a street lamp, according to the Casiglioni brothers themselves. However, its shape is debatable, which makes this lamp all the more interesting. There

Rated 5 out of 5 by Dan O. from The Flos Arco is of exquisite quality and style, and provides a sense of openness to most any contemporary decor. The Arco lamp is stunning in appearance with its simple structure of channel tubing; polish globe and eloquent marble block. The parts are of high quality, right down to the wiring. The clever design permits assembly and disassembly without much effort. Some may wonder if the hole in the block is fashion or function. Well, it’s actually both and it becomes quite obvious once you lay everything out. Both the height and reach of the globe is adjustable to suit your taste, location and decor. However, if you have an 8-foot ceiling it will fit but just barely! In fact, I had to deviate from the assembly guide by attaching all of extensions before attaching the support arm to the block. You will need the added weight of the combined extensions to flex the arc downward in order to obtain the razor-blade ceiling clearance. Cleaning is simple with plain clear water and a soft cloth and no chemicals should ever be used. For a little added protection I carefully applied a thin coat of Renaissance Wax to the entire assembly but that’s just me. The Flos Arco is virtually unchanged since 1962 so there is little point to highlighting its features but I’ll try. It’s supplied with a heavy-duty 120-vac plug with a foot-actuated switch. The stainless steel channel tubing is designed to flex and is quite durable for its intended purpose. The marble block is heavy and will remain stable on any hard surface floor. However, as nice looking as marble is, it’s also delicate and will chip or stain if abused. Overall the lamp is absolutely gorgeous. It’s not likely to ever go out of style since this lamp has been in production since 1962. In fact, it’s typically found as background art in several modern furniture magazines. YLighting customer service is good. They use Con-Way Freight as their shipper for this item and they are professional. Regards, Dan Date published: 2010-03-04
